Are there hidden costs (support, storage, backup)?

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is often cited as the most transparent of the major cloud providers, specifically because it eliminates several "hidden" fees that are industry standards elsewhere. However, there are still nuanced costs to be aware of to ensure your "rental" stays within budget.

1. Support: Included for Free

This is the biggest "hidden" saving in OCI.

  • The Norm: Most cloud providers charge 3% to 10% of your total monthly bill for "Enterprise Support."

  • OCI’s Approach: Enterprise Support is included in the base price of the services. Whether you are spending $100 or $100,000, you have access to technical support for production workloads without an additional line item on your bill.

2. Storage: The "VPU" Variable

While the base cost of storage is low, the performance you choose can double the price.

  • Storage Capacity: $0.0255 per GB/month (Standard).

  • Performance Units (VPUs): You pay for the "speed" of the disk separately.

    • Balanced (10 VPUs): ~$0.017 per GB/month extra.

    • Ultra High Performance (120 VPUs): ~$0.204 per GB/month extra.

  • The "Hidden" Part: If you enable Performance Auto-tune, OCI will automatically crank up these VPUs (and your bill) when the server is under heavy load. It's a great feature, but it can lead to fluctuating costs.

3. Backups: Paid by the GB

Backups are not included in the price of your compute instance or block volume.

  • Cost: You are billed for the amount of data stored in your backup vault, typically at a rate similar to Object Storage ($0.0255 per GB/month).

  • Retention Policy: If you set a policy to "Keep daily backups for 30 days," you are paying for 30 versions of that data. For a 1 TB drive, this can quickly become a significant monthly expense.

4. Data Egress: The 10 TB Shield

Data leaving the cloud (Egress) is the most common "bill shock" in cloud computing.

  • The Good News: OCI gives you the first 10 TB of egress for free every month. For 90% of small-to-medium businesses, this means your networking bill will be $0.

  • The Catch: If you are a high-volume streamer or a massive data warehouse moving petabytes of data, you will pay per GB. However, OCI's rates ($0.0085 to $0.05 per GB) are still up to 10x cheaper than competitors.

5. Load Balancer Bandwidth

If you rent a Load Balancer, you pay a small base hourly fee (~$0.0113), but you also pay for bandwidth usage (~$0.0001 per Mbps/hour). While tiny, if you are running a high-traffic site 24/7, this can add up to $20–$50 per month per load balancer that you might not have initially calculated.
