Can rented servers connect to on-premises data centers?

Yes, your "rented" servers can absolutely connect to your on-premises data center. This is a standard requirement for most enterprises in 2026, often referred to as a Hybrid Cloud setup.

Oracle provides three primary ways to bridge the gap between your cloud servers and your local infrastructure:

1. The "Backbone": Dynamic Routing Gateway (DRG)

The DRG is the most important component for hybrid connectivity. Think of it as a virtual high-performance router that sits at the edge of your cloud network.

  • Central Hub: It collects all your incoming connections—whether from a VPN, a dedicated line, or even other cloud regions—and securely directs that traffic to your private servers.

  • Cost: The DRG service itself is free (no hourly or data processing fees).

2. Option A: Site-to-Site VPN (Quick & Free)

This is the easiest way to get started. It creates an encrypted tunnel over the public internet.

  • Cost: $0. Oracle does not charge for VPN tunnels or connection hours.

  • Standard: It uses industry-standard IPSec (AES-256), making it compatible with almost any corporate firewall (Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, etc.).

  • Redundancy: OCI automatically gives you two tunnels for every connection to ensure your link stays up even during maintenance.

3. Option B: FastConnect (Dedicated & Powerful)

If you are moving massive amounts of data (like AI training sets or high-frequency database replication), you’ll want FastConnect.

  • What it is: A dedicated, physical fiber connection that bypasses the internet.

  • Benefits: Guaranteed low latency and high bandwidth (up to 400 Gbps in 2026).

  • The "No Egress" Perk: Unlike other cloud providers, OCI does not charge for the data you move over FastConnect. You only pay a flat monthly fee for the port.

4. Option C: OCI Compute Cloud@Customer

If you have data that legally cannot leave your building, but you want the cloud experience:

  • Cloud at Home: Oracle can ship a rack of OCI hardware directly to your data center.

  • Seamless Connectivity: It runs the exact same software and APIs as the public cloud, but it's physically plugged into your local network, eliminating latency and compliance headaches.

Pro-Tip: DNS Resolution

The biggest hurdle in hybrid cloud is usually "naming." By default, your cloud servers won't know the names of your on-premises servers (and vice-versa). OCI provides Private DNS Zones and Resolvers that you can configure to automatically forward name requests across your VPN or FastConnect, allowing you to use server.internal.corp instead of memorizing IP addresses.
