What are the different PowerEdge server models?

Dell PowerEdge servers come in several model families, each designed for specific workloads and deployment environments. Instead of just a long list of model numbers, it’s easier (and more useful) to understand them by category and naming pattern.


1. Rack Servers (R-series)

These are the most widely used Dell PowerEdge servers models in data centers.

Examples:

  • R250 / R350 – Entry-level, single-socket servers
  • R450 / R550 – Mid-range, balanced performance
  • R650 / R750 – High-performance, dual-socket servers
  • R760 / R860 – Latest generation, optimized for AI, analytics, and heavy workloads

Key traits:

  • Fit into standard racks (1U, 2U, etc.)
  • Scalable and space-efficient
  • Ideal for virtualization, databases, and cloud

2. Tower Servers (T-series)

Designed for offices without dedicated server rooms.

Examples:

  • T150 / T350 – Small business and entry workloads
  • T550 – More powerful, enterprise-capable

Key traits:

  • Look like desktop towers
  • Quiet operation
  • Easy to deploy in office environments

3. Modular / Blade Servers (MX-series)

High-density systems for large enterprises.

Examples:

  • MX7000 (chassis)
  • MX740c / MX840c (compute sleds)

Key traits:

  • Multiple servers in one chassis
  • Shared power, cooling, networking
  • Highly scalable and efficient

4. Dense & Multi-Node Servers (C-series)

Examples:

7. Mission-Critical Servers

Understanding the Naming (Simple Trick)

Take R750 as an example:

  • R = Rack
  • 7 = Performance tier (higher = more powerful)
  • 50 = Generation (newer models have higher numbers like 60, 70)
