What is cloud monitoring?
In our journey through Observability and Chaos Engineering, we’ve seen the high-tech ways we "interrogate" a system to find out why it’s failing. But before you can perform a deep diagnostic, you need a reliable, 24/7 pulse check.
That is Cloud Monitoring. It is the baseline of your infrastructure—the "Vital Signs" monitor in a hospital that tells you if the patient is breathing, their heart is beating, and their temperature is stable.
Cloud Monitoring is the process of using automated tools to track the performance, availability, and security of your cloud-based resources. While Observability asks "Why is this happening?", Monitoring answers the simpler, more urgent question: "Is it broken?"
It involves collecting data from every layer of your stack:
The Website: Is the URL loading for users?
The Server: Is the CPU at 100%? Is the disk full?
The Database: Are queries taking too long?
The Network: Is there a spike in traffic or a drop in connectivity?

Think of a Home Security System.
Monitoring: Is the sensor on the front door. It has two states: "Closed" or "Open." If it opens at 3 AM, it triggers an alarm. It doesn't tell you who opened it or why—it just tells you the "State" has changed.
