The Four Tiers of Reliability

Tier I: Basic Capacity

A Tier I facility is essentially a server room with a single path for power and cooling.

Tier II: Redundant Capacity

  • The Flaw: While components are redundant, the distribution path is not. If a main pipe bursts or a primary breaker trips, the whole facility still goes dark.

Tier III: Concurrently Maintainable

This is the standard for most major enterprise and cloud providers (including many Oracle Cloud regions).

  • Redundancy: Features multiple independent distribution paths for power and cooling.

  • Maintenance: You can perform a "Concurrent Maintenance" event—meaning you can take any single part of the system offline for service without affecting the servers.

  • Uptime: 99.982% (roughly 1.6 hours of downtime per year).

  • Best For: E-commerce, global corporations, and mission-critical databases.

Tier IV: Fault Tolerant

The "Fort Knox" of data centers. Tier IV is designed to handle a major hardware failure without a single second of impact.

  • Redundancy: Uses the 2N or 2N+1 power model we discussed previously. Every single component and path is fully mirrored.

  • The Difference: In Tier III, a mistake (like a technician hitting the wrong button) might cause a crash. In Tier IV, the system is "Fault Tolerant," meaning it is designed to survive human error or spontaneous equipment explosions.

Which Tier Does Your Hardware Need?
