DNS (Domain Name System) failover is like a smart GPS for the internet 🌐. Normally, DNS simply points a website name (like example.com) to a specific server's IP address. But what happens if that server goes down?

Without failover, your users see an error page. With DNS Failover, the system detects the "crash" and automatically reroutes traffic to a backup server, keeping the website online. It relies on three main parts:

  • Health Checks 🩺: The DNS provider constantly pings your primary server to make sure it's alive and responding.

  • Thresholds 🚦: You decide how many "missed pings" count as a failure (to avoid switching because of a 1-second blip).

  • Automatic Rerouting 🔃: Once a failure is confirmed, the DNS record is updated to point to the IP address of your healthy backup server.
