  • Virtual Machines (VMs): Your application runs on a Guest OS, which sits on a Hypervisor (the software that carves one physical server into many virtual ones).   • Bare Metal: You are the only "tenant." There is zero chance of a neighbor affecting your performance. This makes Bare Metal the go-to for deterministic performance (where every millisecond of processing time must be identical every time).

  • Virtual Machines: These are the kings of agility. You can spin up a VM in seconds, resize it (change CPU/RAM) with a quick reboot, and shut it down when finished. With OCI Flexible Shapes, you can pick exactly 3 cores and 42GB of RAM, for example.

  • Bare Metal: These take a few minutes longer to provision because the physical hardware has to be initialized. You also cannot "resize" them easily; you rent the whole box (e.g., 32, 64, or 128 cores). If you only need 4 cores, Bare Metal is an expensive overkill.
