Think of cloud computing models like the process of getting a pizza. Depending on how much work you want to do versus how much you want to pay someone else to handle, you have three distinct levels of service.

In the tech world, these levels—IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS—determine exactly where your responsibility ends and the cloud provider's begins.


The Hierarchy of Control

To understand the difference at the infrastructure level, we have to look at the "stack." A typical IT environment consists of networking, storage, servers, virtualization, the operating system (OS), middleware, runtime, data, and applications.

1. IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)

"The Raw Materials"

IaaS provides the fundamental building blocks. You aren't buying a finished product; you’re renting the digital equivalent of a blank server room.

  • What the Provider Manages: Physical data centers, cooling, power, networking hardware, storage disks, and the virtualization layer (hypervisor).

  • What You Manage: The OS (Windows/Linux), middleware, runtimes, and every scrap of data and code.

  • Infrastructure Impact: You have total control over the configuration. If you need a specific kernel version or a custom firewall setup, IaaS is your go-to.

  • Example: Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, Microsoft Azure VMs.

2. PaaS (Platform as a Service)

"The Builder’s Toolkit"

PaaS removes the headache of managing the underlying hardware and the operating system. It provides a framework for developers to build, test, and deploy apps without worrying about "plumbing."

  • What the Provider Manages: Everything in IaaS, plus the Operating System, middleware (like databases), and the runtime (like Java, Python, or .NET).

  • What You Manage: Just the application code and the data it uses.

  • Infrastructure Impact: You lose "root" access to the server. You can’t tweak the OS settings, but you gain massive speed because the environment is pre-configured and auto-scales.

  • Example: Heroku, Google App Engine, AWS Elastic Beanstalk.

3. SaaS (Software as a Service)

"The Finished House"

This is the most common model for everyday users. The entire stack is managed by the provider. You simply log in via a web browser or app.

  • What the Provider Manages: The entire stack—from the physical cables in the ground to the final user interface.

  • What You Manage: Basically nothing, besides your own user settings and files.

  • Infrastructure Impact: You have zero visibility into the infrastructure. You don't know (and don't need to know) what OS or database is running in the background.

  • Example: Gmail, Slack, Salesforce, Microsoft 365.
