What is the difference between Quarter Rack and Full Rack?

While all Exadata machines share the same "DNA," the difference between a Quarter Rack and a Full Rack is all about density and scale.

Think of a Quarter Rack as a powerful, high-performance starter home, while a Full Rack is a massive, multi-story corporate headquarters. Both are built with the same premium materials, but one is designed to house a single family, and the other can support an entire enterprise.


1. Physical Component Comparison

The most obvious difference is the quantity of servers inside the 42U rack. In the latest generations (like the X10M), the ratios are as follows:

2. High Availability (The "Voting Disk" Factor)

While both configurations are highly redundant, they handle failure differently:

  • Quarter Rack (Minimum Entry): With 3 storage cells, you have enough to support "Normal Redundancy" (2-way mirroring). This means you can lose one storage cell and stay online.

  • Full Rack (Maximum Protection): With 14 storage cells, you have more than enough to support "High Redundancy" (3-way mirroring). Most importantly, Oracle recommends at least 5 storage cells to perfectly host Voting Disks for the most robust High Availability (HA) clusters. This is why many mission-critical shops consider a Half Rack or larger as their "Gold Standard" for HA.


3. Performance & Throughput

Because Exadata uses a scale-out architecture, performance scales linearly. A Full Rack is approximately 4.6x more powerful than a Quarter Rack in every category.

  • Smart Scan Speed: In a Full Rack, you have 14 Storage Engines filtering data in parallel, compared to just 3 in a Quarter Rack.

  • IOPS: A Full Rack can handle over 25 million IOPS, whereas a Quarter Rack typically tops out around 5-6 million.

  • Network Bandwidth: While both use 100Gbps RoCE, the Full Rack has more "pipes" active simultaneously, allowing it to move terabytes of data per second.


4. When to Choose Which?

Choose a Quarter Rack if:

  • You are migrating a few large, performance-heavy databases.

  • You are starting a "Proof of Concept" (PoC) and want to scale later.

  • Your storage needs are in the tens of terabytes range.

  • You need a Disaster Recovery (DR) site that doesn't need to match the full power of your primary site.

Choose a Full Rack if:

  • Massive Consolidation: You want to move 100+ different databases onto a single platform.

  • Extreme Analytics: You are running petabyte-scale data warehouses with hundreds of concurrent users.

  • Mission Criticality: You require the highest levels of redundancy and don't want a single component failure to even slightly degrade performance.


5. The "Elastic" Middle Ground

It’s important to note that modern Exadata (X8M and later) uses Elastic Configurations.

You are no longer stuck with just "Quarter" or "Full." You can start with a Quarter Rack and add one database server or one storage server at a time. This allows you to grow your "Quarter Rack" into a "Full Rack" organically as your business expands, without ever having to do a "forklift upgrade."
