In the world of cloud networking, it’s the specialized "virtual router" that sits at the edge of your cloud network, waiting to establish an encrypted connection with the outside world—usually your office or your laptop.


1. The Core Concept: The Secure Handshake

Normally, sending data over the internet is like sending a postcard; anyone handling it can read what’s written. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) Gateway takes that data, puts it in a locked armored box (encryption), and sends it through a dedicated "tunnel" to a specific destination.

There are two main ways a VPN Gateway is used in the cloud:

  • Site-to-Site VPN: Connects your entire office building to your Cloud VPC. To the employees in the office, the cloud servers look like they are sitting in the room next door.

  • Point-to-Site (Client VPN): Connects a single device (like a remote worker's laptop) directly to the Cloud VPC.

2. How It Works (The "Gateway" Duo)

To make a Site-to-Site VPN happen, you usually need two "gateways" to talk to each other:

  1. Virtual Private Gateway (VGW): This lives on the Cloud side (e.g., AWS or Azure). It’s the entrance to your private cloud network.

  2. Customer Gateway (CGW): This is the physical or software-based router on your side (the office).

When these two perform a "handshake" using the IPsec protocol, they create an encrypted path. Even though the data is technically traveling over the public internet, it is unreadable to anyone trying to intercept it.
